Re: [IRCA] Ultralight Radio DXing Takes Off in Japan

Hi Stephen,

There are a couple of factors which have contributed to the current Ultralight radio DXing craze in Japan.

First of all, AM-DXingÂhas always been more of a "mainstream" activity in Japan thanÂhere in North America, with greater acceptance and popularityÂamong theÂgeneral public. When I lived in Japan as a teenager (from 1967-69), it was common to see Sony and Panasonic portable radios advertised for their DXing potential. Secondly,ÂUltralight radio DXing groups worldwide seem to have had somewhat more success than other radio hobby groups in attracting younger members into the hobby-- maybe because the "price of admission" is so much lower?. In any case, the new Japanese Ultralight radio DXing group seems to have no problem in attracting various members in their 30's and 40's into the hobby, and they are pretty enthusiastic about their new activity as well.
