[IRCA] New C.Crane "Skywave" Vs. Tecsun PL-380-- Daytime DX Shootout

Chuck and Walt,

After all the profound discussion about the new C. Crane "Skywave's" audio reproduction I finally remembered that the model has two selectable audio options-- "Music" (the default option,Âunder which the previous Shootout MP3's were recorded) and "Voice" (which deletes the high-treble audio emphasis, and makes the audio sound pretty much identical to that of the Tecsun PL-380 in its 1 kHzÂDSP selection). The "Voice" option is not played up very much in the Skywave manual, and is not labeled on the front panel. You need to go to the end of the manual to find out about it, andÂthen press the "1" and "2" buttons simultaneously (while the radio is on) to select it.

So a DXer can choose which of the two audio patterns he prefers, if he is optimistic enough to attempt transoceanic DXing withÂthe barefoot Skywave portable. I suppose that for $89.95Â (before shipping) thatÂis probably the least we should expect.

I guess it works for you, Chuck, but to me I prefer the higher frequencies
even with the mild hiss. ÂFor whatever reason, I find it less fatiguing and
more intelligible as well. Â73, ÂWalt
