Three weeks ago we set up a Double-Kaz antenna on elevated land overlooking
the Utah desert; right at the Colorado state line. We oriented East-West
for the captures below. The first report below lists SOME of the signals
from an EAST-facing deployment; the second list is with the antenna facing
WEST. These report ignore stations closer than about 300 miles.
1. FACING EAST: After nulling out the backside (using KOAL-750 in Price
Utah) we report the following stations at 4 PM MST on 111013. This is just
a rough first pass with the Perseus SDR; we haven't dug into the tougher
channels yet, nor have we started looking into the GYs:
0570 WNAX YANKTON, SD
0650 KGAB CHEYENNE, WY
0750 KMMJ GRAND ISLAND, NE
0770 KATL MILES CITY, MT
0790 KFGO FARGO, ND
0800 CKST LANGLEY, BC
0860 KKOW PITTSBURG, KS
0900 KJSK COLUMBUS, NE
0960 KFLN BAKER, MT
0980 KDSJ DEADWOOD, SD
1070 KATQ PLENTYWOOD, MT
1130 KBMR BISMARCK, ND
1140 KZMQ GREYBULL, WY
1150 KSEN SHELBY, MT
1220 KDDR OAKES, ND
1270 KIML GILLETTE, WY
1290 KMMM PRATT, KS
1320 KOLT SCOTTSBLUFF, NE
1330 KNSS WICHITA, KS
1350 KRNT DES MOINES, IA
1380 KOTA RAPID CITY, SD
1410 KGSO WICHITA, KS
1440 KMAJ TOPEKA, KS
1480 KQAM WICHITA, KS
1580 KAMI COZAD, NE
1590 KVGB GREAT BEND, KS
COMMENT: The use of 750 in Price Utah as the 'noise' signal allowed us to
obtain a better-than-40 db null to the West. There were literally NO
stations from the West on any channel, with the exception of a weak KSL
1160, 50 kilowatts at 250 miles.
2. THE NEXT LIST IS A COMPOSITE OF LOGGINGS MADE AT 5 PM, 6 PM AND 7 PM
MST...with the antenna facing West and using KOA Denver as the noise signal
for nulling. (We were able to take KOA right down into the noise floor.)

COMMENTS: Any Double-Kaz non-believers still around? I want to thank Neil
Kazaross for explaining the Double-Kaz antenna at the recent joint
convention. I became an instant convert when he displayed the EZNEC pattern
for pickup capability.
After nulling KOA, there were literally NO signals heard from the
East...with the exception of WHO and WOAI wandering in and out occasionally.
If there's one thing "wrong" with the antenna it's the ultra-wide acceptance
angle. We plan to duplicate this DX-Pedition using D-Kaz antennas in
BROADSIDE ARRAY, narrowing the beam-width. For this deployment, antenna
dimensions were 120 feet end-to-end with a 20-foot height. A 10 db RF
amplifier was used to overcome the inherently low-level output; most
noticeable apparent on the low end due to the small size of the array.
Further info available...

Mark Durenberger
