[IRCA] Cape Perpetua, Oregon Cliffside DXing - Sept. 10th - Logs, Files, & Photos

I've now gone through the second day's Perseus files, looking for new
stations with the proverbial fine tooth comb, although I'll bet there's
still more low-level DX to be found. Like on the 9th, the pre-dawn DX
on Sept. 10th peaked 20 minutes before sunrise. There were more DU signals
mixing with the TPs this time around however.

I continue to be impressed with the great match the Wellbrook FLG100LN
preamp module is for the Ferrite Sleeve Loop antenna. The combo is very
sensitive! Perhaps the Wellbrook ALA100 (or new LN version) will work just
as well, but if the input impedance is different than the FLG100LN's 1200
ohms, the homebrew transformer will require a different turns ratio.

Green Salmon Coffee and Tea <http://www.thegreensalmon.com/> in Yachats
Oregon is a great destination for tired DXers to retreat to after a busy
morning session of DXing at nearby Cape Perpetua. All coffee is roasted
in-house, and the entire operation is as organic, green, and eco-friendly
as a small business can get. Even the cash register, hallway lights,
outdoor fountain, and music system are solar powered.

**The logs below are all unique stations/frequencies *unheard* the previous
morning (Sept. 9)**

585 JAPAN JOPG Kushiro, likely this 10 kw outlet rather than much lower
power NHK1 stations on this frequency, with Japanese talk by two
announcers. Poor at 1345.

603 JAPAN UNID, a near threshold level signal here, and I could barely
identify the language as Japanese after multiple replays of the recording.
Perhaps JOOG Obihiro, a 5 kw NHK1 station on the northern island, but
programming didn't appear parallel to other NHK1 frequencies.

612 AUSTRALIA 4QR Brisbane fading in slowly at 1337 and up to a fair to
good level 1341 with a man and woman in English. A promo of some sort with
multiple "ABC" mentions heard at 1342. Threshold level shortly after, and
at 1400 the ABC trumpet fanfare and news intro was barely audible.

630 UNIDENTIFIED, an Aussie sounding station heard here 1340-1345, mixing
with domestic outlets. Mostly gone by 1400, but one station on the
frequency announced at threshold level "ABC Newsradio" by an accented
female announcer.

675 AUSTRALIA UNID, a weak signal slowly faded up on 675 with Aussie accent
man and woman announcers; I caught a couple mentions of Australia prior to
1340, and then a country music song (by Randy Travis I think) was played.
Fade out was a few minutes later. Possibly 2CO, Corowa.

702 AUSTRALIA 2BL Sydney, noted in English 1335-1350, fading in and out
with an NHK2 station (presumed JOKD Kitami in northern Japan). This was a
tricky frequency to determine the background non-Aussie station, as I was
hearing mostly Chinese language mixing it up with 2BL. After a while I
realized I was hearing NHK2 programming of a Chinese language lesson, in
parallel with 693 JOAB Tokyo.

711 CHINA UNID, faintly at 1337 and again at 1347, with female announcer in
Chinese.

729 JAPAN JOCK Nagoya, first heard weakly at 1335, and rising to a good
signal by 1345 with Japanese talk. 3+1 TPs at 1400, followed by "NHK"
network ID.

738 TAHITI Polynesie 1ere, fair with French talk 1323-1338. First time
heard on this trip.

774 AUSTRALIA 3LO Melbourne, noted 1333 with ABC programming in the
background of a strong JOUB Akita.

792 AUSTRALIA 4RN Brisbane, man and woman announcers in English 1335; ABC
trumpet fanfare and into news at 1400. Heard in background of
self-inflicted Perseus DC power supply noise... note to self: never, EVER
trust a switching PS again, no matter how much it begs to taken on a
DXpedition :^(

801 UNIDENTIFIED, threshold level signal heard at 1349 for a minute or two,
possibly Korean language. A 500 kw KCBS station is listed for this
frequency.

819 NORTH KOREA, likely the powerful KCBS Pyongyang station, mostly fair
signal from 1334 to nearly gone at 1400, with Korean classical chorus, and
a radio play or drama in Korean. Faint 5+1 TPs heard in the noise level at
1400, presumably from this station as it faded down.

828 UNIDENTIFIED, talk in Aussie accented English by one or two male
announcers, in the background behind a strong JOBB Osaka at 1334. Brief
mention of Australia heard, and audio was parallel to 891. My guess is 3GI
Gippsland.

837 JAPAN JOQK Niigata, good level briefly at 1323 with two men in Japanese.

846 JAPAN UNID, another frequency with low power Japanese outlets; weak
Japanese talk from 1333-1345, parallel to 594.

855 AUSTRALIA 4QB Wide Bay, noted this ABC station with programming in
English parallel to 828 and 891 at 1333-1334. Very weak, but splatter was
minimal.

864 JAPAN UNID, Japanese talk by male and female, best early on at 1323.
Per PAL, a number of different network outlets are possibilities here: HBC,
FBC, SBC, ROK, and CRT.

873 JAPAN JOGB Kumamoto, 1338-1341 fair with Japanese talk, mixing with an
UNID Chinese station.

891 AUSTRALIA 5AN Adelaide, 1323-1340 with announcers in English talking
about Middle East tensions, and mentions of Australia. Poor to fair.

900 HAWAII KNUI, strong at 1400 with ID "You're listening to KNUI, the talk
of Maui".

940 HAWAII KKNE, fair signal at 1400 with ID "AM 940 KKNE Waipahu Hawaii,
streaming all traditional Hawaiian, all the time, at am940hawaii.com".

981 CHINA UNID, fair level of fast talk man in Chinese at 1323-1330.

1017 UNIDENTIFIED, a poor signal 1323-1330 of mellow vocals and talk that
was possibly in Chinese.

1035 NEW ZEALAND Newstalk ZB Wellington, tentative with Kiwi accented
female announcer talking news or politics; programming sounded like the
Newstalk ZB network. Poor.

1044 UNIDENTIFIED, two stations battling back and forth on this frequency,
both poor to fair at times. Languages seemed Korean (90% certain), and
likely Chinese, 1323 onwards. Both gone for good by 1400.

1062 SOUTH KOREA HLKQ Cheongju, soft-spoken announcers in Korean, fair at
1338-1340.

1071 JAPAN UNID, poor signal of Japanese talk; was not parallel to NHK2
frequencies, so this might be the STV outlet in Sapporo.

1143 CHINA UNID, mellow music and woman announcer in Chinese, 1330-1343
before dropping into the background.

1170 CHINA UNID, good to very good sigal of male and female announcers at
1333 in Chinese, totally dominating KPUG Bellingham which was *barely*
audible in the background.

1197 JAPAN UNID, perhaps JOWL Sapporo (3 kw, north island) or JOYF Ibaraki
(5 kw main island, on the coast) on this frequency 1337 at fair level with
two men in Japanese.

1215 UNIDENTIFIED, interesting mix here for a short time around 1337. Jazz
keyboards music from one station, mixing with a poor signal of two men in
English and a couple mentions of Australia. Maybe 2TAB Racing Radio mixing
with JOBO or JOBW (both listed as relaying 1143 JOBR, that seemed parallel
with the jazz music). Signal strengths too low to be more definite.

1251 UNIDENTIFIED, another combo frequency, with two Chinese outlets at
1339 and a possible third in the background. Poor.

1278 NEW ZEALAND, tentatively Newstalk ZB Napier with Kiwi sounding English
talk by man at 1338-39. Poor.

1296 JAPAN JOTK Matsue heard in Japanese with male and female announcers
1337. Signal gave way to a presumed Chinese station briefly at 1338, and
then never came back. Poor level.

1323 CHINA VOR with man and woman in Russian 1323 onwards. Sudden jump in
signal strength at 1341 to a good/very good level. Fair level.

1368 UNIDENTIFIED with possible Japanese language at 1338-1339, but just
too weak for a halfway confident guess.

1377 CHINA UNID, two fast talking men in Chinese, fair level at 1342.
Signal gone by 1346.

1395 UNIDENTIFIED, mumbled speech by man at 1341, possibly Chinese
language. Poor and scratchy reception.

1449 JAPAN JOQM Abashiri, tentatively this station with Japanese talk at a
fair level, briefly around 1336. JOQM is on the north coast of the north
island, so presumably better propagating than JOKF on the south end of the
main island of Japan (both 5 kw).

1467 CHINA UNID, putting in a brief, 1-2 minute appearance with male
announcer in Chinese. Most likely suspect is the 10 kw Baoding JDG outlet.

1512 AUSTRALIA 2RN Newcastle in English, only noted for one minute at 1341,
which was parallel to 792 4RN Brisbane. Poor.

1557 JAPAN UNID, three minutes of mellow singing by female in Japanese at
1332-1335; no announcers or other talk before the signal was gone. Mostly
poor to fair level. A Chinese speaker was heard *very* faintly in the
background at 1334:30.

1575 THAILAND VOA, poor to fair signal 1333-1343 in presumed (listed) Khmer
with woman speaker. Signal was gone well before 1400 top of the hour.

1584 JAPAN UNID, another frequency of 100 watt Japanese synchro outlets;
very faint Japanese talk only discernable as Japanese from
1338-1339...otherwise just "mumble mumble" before and after this time.

1593 CHINA CNR1 Changzhou. Yesterday 1593 was JOQB Niigata Japan, but today
only CNR1 was found on the frequency. Male and female announcers in
Chinese, ads or announcements, and a nice mention of "Changzhou" heard at
1334:22. The signal was very good strength from 1324-1344, but mostly gone
by top of the hour. Only 5+1 time pips could be heard at 1400.
