You certainly can't use it for transmitting, and they are a bit pricey, but seriously, the lowest noise antenna I have ever used for general BCB/Shortwave listening and DX is a Wellbrook Loop (1530, in my case).
They are broadband, so you don't need to retune every time you change frequency. That lets you place it outside, although you will have to get electricity to it (it comes with a special low noise amplifier). It also doesn't need to be placed up high, so no trees to worry about.
I'm not affiliated in any way with the company, I just live in a noisy urban environment and couldn't DX without one!
