I've experienced good propagation that (very occasionally) produces clear
audio from a high power TA signal, but certainly not on a crowded domestic
regional channel like 1440. To accomplish that, I think you either need a
highly directional antenna like a Beverage (not an antenna with a figure-8 or
cardioid pattern, like most of us have), or you need to be at a coastal
location, east of all those domestic signals.

At late afternoon near sunset, I can say that the 1440 frequency is still relatively quiet here so that domestic QRM are not big issue at least at this period of the day. Except for the 1170 frequency and an occasional 1530, I can't say that I had success listening to other TA channels that crosses our 10 KHz splits.

Radio Orient 1350 and Radio Makedonija 810 are coming to my mind. While Allan Willie in NFLD has heard them more than once with an ultralight radio at his coastal location, they're still eluding me even by using "heavy" gear! WGY and CJVA simply ruins the 810 frequency in spite of a solid 1200 Kw from Macedonia. There's nothing I can do about it even when trying to phase them out. I'll keep trying however, you never know...

I do agree regardless that a long directional Beverage or other type of antenna with good directional properties as you write will help especially at an inland location like mine (and yours).
