Re: [IRCA] On the nature of DX Alerts

Paul,

I think most DX'ers endorse a middle ground position, actually.

We have no problem with stations who unintentionally stay on late, run on daylight power/pattern/etc. It provides rare DXing opportunities.

Some of us take exception to stations that do it routinely as they do become "pests".

Your action last night makes perfect sense in the context of a broadcaster helping out a fellow broadcaster. The problem is that you became aware of the situation only because you're also a member of this list (which is for DX'ers)

I guess some of us feel that you used that knowledge improperly. A couple of hours wouldn't have hurt, while the "quick alert" on your part
prevented many of us from potentially logging a new station.

No intention to hurt anyone on your part...and lord knows, you've done plenty for the hobby. Others are even more over-zealous.

Every broadcaster I've talked to agrees with me that once a station is made

I totally understand the point the DX'ers are making here, don't get me
wrong.. as I am a DX'er too.

That being said, as a broadcaster, what angers me, is that DX'ers think a
station should continue to operate in a manner other then what they're
licensed for just to suit/benefit a DX'er who hasn't logged the station yet.

However, the DX'ers want their cake and eat it too... if a stations being a
pest, they jump up and down, screaming for the station to stop misbehaving.

DX'ers come across as a group who want a station to operate ill-legally
only when it benefits them.

I am reluctant to chime in on this issue. Paul is an example of a
broadcaster, who is also a friend to DX'ers. He's scheduled or helped to
schedule several
DX tests, and we're all in his debt.

But I do think he was out of line on this one. This list is about DXing,
and once in a lifetime opportunities like that need to be respected. If you
monitor or
lurk on this list for the purpose of reporting violations to the
FCC---you're wasting your time. There are offenders who have been doing so
on a daily basis
for years. They've all been reported numerous times, and the FCC has taken
no action.

The sad part is that Paul's offense is minor compared to the action that
some DX'ers have taken in this regard. Curtis, are you here? During my
tenure
as Test Coordinator, I was shocked at how many DX'ers seemed to consider
themselves as unpaid monitoring employees for the FCC. Failing to get
"action" out of this agency, some of them turned to harassing station
owners, engineers, and even calling other stations on the same frequency
hoping
to solicit their support for their "cause".

My own time to spend DXing is very limited. So Tips and DX tests represent
the best opportunity for me to log new stations. I'm protective of these
lists, and
the people who give generously of their time and expertise to post them.

Paul--you're my friend, and I stand behind you. But I think you made the
wrong call on this one.
