The latest additions to this popular series hosted by the Radio
Heritage Foundation at www.radioheritage.com have now been published.

The features take a nostalgic look back 65 years to the mid-1940s and
the personalities, programs and station profiles of Australian
Heritage AM Radio across the country before TV and FM arrived on the
scene.

Slightly quaint and qwirky for today's reader, the first series has
already reached 50 features of individual stations giving a wonderful
insight into how radio entertained and informed Australians of the
age.

The new features cover two original country radio stations 2XL Cooma
and 4GY Gympie, as well as the famous 2WL Wollongong and all three
are free to access at www.radioheritage.com. 

Old station letterheads and photos have been found to illustrate the
features along with original station logos and station advertising.

2XL Cooma 'Centre of Monaro' broadcast for 8 hours daily with special
sessions for local towns such as Bombala and Adaminaby. It's biggest
claim to fame was the Thursday night Yodelling Session with regular
listeners from New Zealand and many letters each week from Tasmanian
fans.

Yes, a Yodelling Session. We wonder how this would fit in a current
commercial station format in 2011.

This coming November 3, 4GY Gympie will celebrate 70 years on the
air, having started just before the outbreak of WWII in the Pacific.

Originally amateur radio station 4JO, it's owner S L Fittell fought
hard for many years to obtain the commercial licence for 4GY.

The feature includes a photo of the first studios and popular radio
serial stars from The Quiz Kids as well as introducing 4GY
personalities such as Eric Chippendall, Beryl Reed [Womens Session]
whilst manager L G Smith had a background travelling the world as a
radio operator on tramp steamers.

Radio 2WL The South Coast Station was one of the best known
commercial stations in New South Wales outside Sydney and began
broadcasting 80 years ago on July 18 1931.

Russell A Yeldon 'Uncle Bob' was owner, controller and announcer in
1931, and the station grew quickly to expand coverage around
Wollongong and build a strong on-air team including Margaret
Broadfoot [Friendship Club], George Hilders [South Coast Hit Parade]
and Ian Marshall [Around the World With Song].

Syd Hayes of the Illawarra Rugby League was a popular sports voice,
and a number of other personalities are also featured.

Many other early radio personalities are included in these three new
features on 2XL Cooma, 4GY Gympie and 2WL Wollongong.

or even some recordings. Memories of listening to the radio over the
years are also important and wanted because they help people
understand the important community role played by radio over several
generations.
