[IRCA] July 2011 Oregon Beach Ultralight DXpedition Reports (LW and MW)

>From July 12-18 detailed DXpedition testing was conducted on two new
Ferrite Sleeve Loop antennas (FSL's) in the ocean beach environment of
Lincoln City, Oregon. Both a 6.5" diameter Longwave-optimized model and
an 8" diameter MW-optimized model (both about one cubic foot in size)
were tested in their ability to provide competitive reception of
long-distance DX stations throughout their frequency ranges.

The 6.5" diameter Longwave FSL composed of 35 Amidon type 33
(American-made) 4" x 1/2" ferrite rods managed to provide the first
Ultralight radio reception of a Trans-Equatorial South Pacific beacon
from North America-- 270 FA in Apia Upolu, Samoa (1,000 watts at over
5,000 miles distance from the Oregon beach). The astonishing
performance of the new FSL is described in the full DXpedition report

background details on development of the new antennas. The report also
contains MP3 recording links for the 7 Alaskan and 2 Hawaiian beacons
received, as well as a day-by-day report of the challenging conditions
at the beach.

The companion Medium-Wave DXpedition report is also being compiled,
describing the South Pacific DXing performance of the new 8" diameter
FSL model at Lincoln City. The antenna managed to provide reception of
the all-time new Ultralight DXing country of 666-New Caledonia, as well
as several other new South Pacific DX stations. Full details on the
construction and development of the new FSL antennas  will be contained
in an experimental report to follow.
