Karl,
In 1993 I spent a week in March at Puerto Plata on the north coast of the
DR. I'm sure I reported on what I heard in DX News, that would have been in
March or April 1993, if you have any of the old editions.
I got lots of Florida, most east coast clear channels, lots of Venezuela,
Cuba and Puerto Rico, as I recall. All the splits, of course, but many of
those are are now on 10 Khz channels. I remember Venezuela was pounding
in on many channels.
Our man in the DR, Cesar Objio is now deceased, but his brother (cousin?)
Franklin Objio was also a DXer. Might be fun to try to look him up if in
Santo Domingo.
Many Venezuelans are now off the air, and I suspect many are operating with
lower power.
I also did FM DX - seems like it was all DR, though WMCU scattered in from
Miami one time.
With neither AM or FM was Haiti evident. There's a mountain chain in the
middle of the island making those receptions difficult, and power supplies
are probably very inadequate there.
I had the Sony 2010, with a Radio West loop. Not sure I'd try to carry that
on a plane these days - looks like a pipe bomb, with PVC pipe, dial and
battery.

I will be visiting the eastern tip of The Dominican Republic this summer.
Any suggestions where I might hear English broadcasting on medium wave?
Any insight regarding what to expect to hear from the US at night?
Are there active stations on medium wave in The Antilles anymore?
Anything you would like me to checkout for you?
Would it be worth it to bring a shortwave portable (Sony ICF-7600) or
simply stick with an ultralight AM/FM?
I will not be able to put up any external antennas.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts, Karl Zuk N2KZ
