I agree with Colin. I have used my ALA100 with varying amounts of wire in noisy urban environments (hotel rooms), as well as on board ships with metal bodies, and it does deliver. If you can get the loop by a window, or out on a balcony, your success rate will improve. It's also one of the more RF crunchproof antennas around.

It's not cheap, and there are those who will say you can build the equivalent (the antenna preamp and interface), but I haven't actually heard of many people building them, and the one that I tried wasn't as good in signal handling
