I'm not Todd but we know each other
& I'm closer (within 25 miles) of KYMN-1080. I don't
know all the specifics, but I'm told they use multiple
step-down powers. I'm guessing it is automatic but sometimes
fails to step down as low as 11 watts. They have to reduce
power more than once during PSSA. Seems we are never told
such license details exist & wonder how many other
stations do this? (2 or more PSSA powers).
I don't know how to estimate precisely how many watts they
are using but when they go to 11 watts I get a little KRLD
QRM. Todd in Woodbury (E of St. Paul) probably can't hear
them when using 11 watts.
On the night of Twins BB was more than 11 watts, but don't
think having the Twins on was why? They did stay at the
higher power after the Twins game ended, but was definitely
not 1 KW that night. When they did a DX test decades ago,
the 4.2(?) watt PSA was heard in PA & when they went to
1 KW heard in New England with WTIC on the air.
Once I heard KYMN on SSS 1 Kw when I was in Toledo, OH. If
I happen to think about it & can overcome my apathy I
really should check their signal from sunset to 2 hours
after for each month. With the Tecsun PL-310 dBu meter I
should be certain if they reduced power.

Todd,
How strong is their PSSA and are you sure that they don't
sometimes use full day power for Twins games since they are
so strong here in NE IL?
