Hi Walt,
Thanks for your comments, and I'm sure that every NW DXer would
agree that
your Masset DXpedition site has a great edge in propagation from
the MIddle
East, and Asiatic TP's.
After five DU-chasing trips to Grayland with Ultralight equipment, I
thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect in Lincoln City,
Oregon-- but
certainly never expected what I got. Nothing from the DU area had
ever
shown up for me on 585, 603, 666 or 684 kHz at Grayland, but all
of these
had
DU signals at Lincoln City, with 585 and 603 both seeming to have
weak DU
co-channels. 738 had a Tahiti-2NR snarl that pegged the new
PL-380's S/N
display reading at maximum, and DU co-channels were pestering 639-
Fiji and
657-Southern Star almost every morning. The situation seemed pretty
ludicrous
for someone with a $75 modified ULR and 3' tuned passive loop--
but it
sure
is easy to get used to!

Gary, a few miles sure seems to make a big difference. I recall
down at
Canon Beach DXing during a July week holiday a couple of years
back, and
being very impressed with the amount of DU dx audible only using
my Sony
2010
and built in whip. Seems to me that the further north we go along
the
coast, the more difficult the DU DX, and of course conversely the
more
Asian DX
which pours in. In Masset in late June/early July there were
mornings of
decent DU reception, but nothing like you were hearing in Oregon.
Then
again, as I type this, I'm enjoying some Perseus files from
3January at
01:00
this year from Masset, and have been blown away with the number of
Iranian
transmitters carrying the 1st program, so easy to locate
parallels! Then
there's Saudi Arabia 1440 way over anything domestic. Don't
mention Radio
Farda pegging the meter on 1575! Radio Sawa likewise on 1431 from
Djibouti.
Bottom line, wherever we listen from, there can be some pretty
interesting programming to DX, domestic or foreign........Walt

Hi Guy,
Thanks very much for listening to the 585 kHz MP3, and for
your helpful
comments.
When I first tuned to 585 kHz (in Oregon) and heard the classic
rock at a
decent level, I had absolutely no idea what it was. Nothing like
that had
ever shown up for me at Grayland on my modest equipment. Many
other DU
surprises followed, though, like the fairly strong NZ Maori
station on 603, a DU
talk station fighting it out with 639-Fiji every morning, 666
kHz in
French, a 684 kHz parallel with 639-Fiji, a weak DU co-channel
(with talk
format) on 657 kHz with NZ's Southern Star, and other mysteries.
The variety and strength of the DU signals in Lincoln City
was completely
unexpected, and made me wonder whether we were getting the
short end of the
stick at Grayland :-)

Hi Gary,
Thanks for posting the MP3s. On the 585 recording, the meat
of the possible
ID is between 2:18.3 and 2:20.5, a mere two and a half
seconds! However,
I'm
90% sure I'm hearing the male announcer with an Aussie
accent, and in
English as you mentioned.
I've listened to it over and over, at 0.7x the original
playback speed
(with
pitch adjustment, in Total Recorder Pro). As best as I can
make out, I'm
hearing: "..news... ..??EB...Halpern (or
"Melbourne")" That's it! It's
a
real tough audio segment to understand. I hope another DXer can
make out
more details.
The most promising clues that it's 585 2WEB is the Aussie
accent and the
"..EB" partial callsign that I might be hearing.
A very nice DU catch on an ultralight, whatever it really
was, Gary!
