Hi Colin, Nick and Kevin,
The socially unacceptable hour of 0900 UTC has had some extremely
acceptable DX recently, with signals almost good enough to make you forget you are
losing sleep (and developing a bizarre reputation).
After the sunrise TP's started to tank in mid-December, the near-daily
appearance of 1575-Farda just wasn't enough to satisfy the transoceanic DXing
urge, so I found myself checking the Asian sunset TP's almost every morning
around 0900 UTC. Any expectation of new loggings is unrealistic, but the
common TP's can really boom in at times. 594, 738, 747, 774, 828, 972, 1134,
1287, 1566 and 1575 can all reach "9" levels on great mornings, although
this is rare. Usually the signals are modest-- but still better than the
anemic sunrise variety this month. Like Nick has mentioned, domestic splatter
is worse at this inconvenient hour, but the TP's usually have their
strongest peaks at differing times, as the sunset gray line spreads across Asia.
This gives you about a one hour period to track their progress, with peak
signals recently starting around 0900, and fizzling out around 1000.
Depending upon one's schedule, it a nice option for those going through TP-DXing
withdrawal symptoms (like me :-)

This is what it is like in Hawaii all the time.
Sure, the most intense stuff is at LSR - but why get up at 6AM
when you can get 80% of the excitement at 11:00 PM local time.
