[IRCA] mid-ocean report 8 Sept.

Think I have to agree with others that this was a better morning than the
preceding two.

Still lots of shipboard electrical noise, but signals were rising above it more
than before. Quite a nice mix of Chinese, Australian, with more Japanese than
yesterday as well (though the kingpins on 774 etc.are slaughtered by noise) .
And North Koreans made their first appearance on 657, 801 and 819. What still
isn't turning up is HLAZ-1566, interestingly (presumably due to its directional
antennas), though 972 is always there, even in the noisiest part of the band.
1170 is a solid mix of KBS and VoA (should be able to check for Walt's CC if I
set the recorder earlier, though that's long before local sunrise). CRI on 1044
is often good with the JJ broadcast before 1600UT. And 1548 is the big
Australian, not heard much at home.

Had only heard CNR1 on 1593 before now; but 1377 had a fine signal as well
today, along with 639, 945 (in the middle of the noisiest part of the band), and
981.

There seemed to be a later DU enhancement, with some signs of audio in the
extended band, and 891 punching through the noise, with 1161 seeming to be
parallel for the TAB stations.

And....during the day, we listen to R. Monumental from Costa Rica (no kidding).
There's reasonable satellite internet service here and the cook, originally
from Costa Rica, listens to streaming Monumental on his netbook...thought I
recognized that distinct whistle.

best wishes,

Nick
