Re: [IRCA] [Tvfmdx] Frank FM 97.1 on 1310- Still ???

This might sound a bit far fetched - but are there *any* 1310's that are rebroadcasting audio from an off-air FM source? My thinking is the whole Frank 97.1 thing might be a ruse, and that if some AM station is relying on picking up it's audio from any FM source, what we may have here is a sort of overnight hijacking.

Example: Let's use WEMG Camden NJ as an example. WEMG has an antenna hung outside to receive whatever programming that normally runs on some semi-distant FM station. I live/drive/walk near the 1310 tx site and with my $20 fm transmitter, key up a signal good enough for the rx to pick up and wallah, I'm on the air on 1310. Doesn't really matter what frequency is mentioned or imaging I use... or anything really. I now have a 250 watt night signal at my disposal to mess around with, and because the station probably hasn't had a regular listener after sunset in 30 years, I could do this every night and nobody would be the wiser.

I know that whole scenario is from way out in left field... just trying to think out of the box on this one. I heard of an FM translator or two being 'taken over' in much the same way.

My only other guess would be a 1310 station having access to the use of a translator on 97.1, where the imaging is geared toward the FM frequency.

Monitoring the frequency here tonight and all I'm hearing above the din is an Oldies station (presumed Ottawa) and Spanish music ID'ing as "La Mega" (which might actually be WEMG).

I'm no help at all - 1310 is all local WTLC-AM and oddly we do have a
97.1 but it's Hank-FM and quite Country. :)

I've been pondering this one as I've been driving around the last couple of days, and here's what I'm thinking: this may not be a licensed station.

"Frank FM" is a trademarked name belonging to Nassau Broadcasting, and they own no stations on either 1310 or 97.1. What's more, I can't find even a single instance of a co-owned 1310/97.1 pair anywhere in the US or Canada. Only a couple of 97.1s even share a market with a 1310 (Dallas, most notably) - and they're competitors, in each case.

I wonder if this is someone's hobby Part 15 station, perhaps running on both AM and FM from somewhere relatively close to John?
