[IRCA] Thursday August 18th ULR TP Loggings - Yachats, OR

A late night of family activities on Tuesday conspired to keep me away from
the dials Wednesday morning. It sounds like I missed an interesting DX
session...I wonder if I would have heard TPs as John B. did, or DUs as Walt
Salmaniw logged?

I did make it up at 1215 UTC (5:15am local) this morning though, but found
very slim pickings on the band. What a difference from the healthy signal
levels of Tuesday! Two surprises were found right at max dawn, however: a
sudden, massive signal from 1575 VOA Thailand, and an appearance by RTM
Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu.

------------------

594 JAPAN JOAK Tokyo, poor to fair with man and woman in JJ at 1302.

747 JAPAN JOIB Sapporo with poor to fair signal, and talk in JJ by man and
woman at 1250. A 1 kHz de-tune on the D96L receiver helped out with audio
recovery, despite the "soft mute" effect. I was surprised at the
improvement, since I've only seen benefit before when de-tuning stronger TP
signals.

774 JOUB Akita with English lessons. Poor at 1251, and parallel to 747.

828 JAPAN JOBB Osaka, weak JJ talk by male at 1239.

1134 JAPAN JOQR Tokyo heard with a weak signal in JJ with a female announcer
at 1257.

1475 MALAYSIA RTM Kota Kinabalu with weak Bahasa Malaysian lang. (very
similar sounding to Indonesian) and talk by man and woman from 1314 to 1320
UTC. Slightly stronger at 1321 with romantic pop music in presumed Bahasa
Malaysian. The signal was definitely centered on 1475, determined by
de-tuning the D96L and listening for the "soft mute" to kick in with reduced
signal. The strongest level was definitely on 1475, and the sound and
programming of RTM matches my prior loggings of this station.

1566 SOUTH KOREA HLAZ Cheju heard with a poor to fair signal in JJ at 1248.

1575 THAILAND VOA Ayutthaya, noted with a sudden dramatic rise in strength
from very poor to excellent in less than a minute (!) at 1308. Presumed news
in listed Khmer lang., with female announcer and a brief "VOA" sung by a
woman in English at 1314. The station was completely gone at a 1321 recheck
of the frequency. I wish I would have remembered to bring my digital voice
recorder, which I use for recording ULR audio!
