Re: [IRCA] ALA 100

Hi Chris,
Nick has pretty well answered your question. But a couple of additional comments. Of course the loop is used vertically; it would work horizontally but would be an omnidirectional pattern. Lots of folks on ndblist use various size loops with ALA100 preamps for LF reception. They have found, at least on LF, that the lobe is fairly narrow and you can't just put up an E/W loop for example and expect to hear 90 degrees on each end. A K9AY antenna loop has a broad front lobe, but not the loop used with the ALA100. I would think it would be the same for MW reception as for LF. Depending on your proximity to strong AM stations pretty much determines how large a loop you can use, and if you're pointing the loop right at one of those stations. Of course the larger the loop the better the ultimate sensitivity. I have several years experience using the ALA100 loop preamp, but nothing like what guys like Colin and Nick and Walt have.

Patrick,

I'm interested in the ALA 100 also, especially if the figure 8 pattern is
narrow. It uses +12VDC. So there's some sort of active circuit inside the
little blackbox. Do you (or anyone else) know what the circuit does for the
antenna?
