The loop's figure 8 pattern has the broad lobes and relatively narrow nulls of a standard loop antenna pattern, Chris.

Definitely a preamplifier at the antenna.  Primarily acts as a balanced to unbalanced active device so that the noise level from the antenna is low, but there is some gain as well.
