Hey Dennis:

Do you have a hi-Z input to the receiver, and if so does that fare better
than inserting into the 50-ohm SO-239 jack?  A longwire/longclip antenna
is typically several hundred ohms...

Also, have you tried terminating the paperclip?  I'm thinking you should
have a good ground this time of year :-).
