Re: [IRCA] What's with this ultralight stuff?

Hello Leonard,

You can feel free to blame me for all this ultralight stuff. I was a
typical, casual AM-DXer until about a year ago, when I bought a cheap $17 Sony
SRF-59 Walkman, and found out I could hear 3 Japanese and Korean TP stations
with it (JOIB-747, JOAK-594 and HLCA-972). It was a phenomenal thrill, and
I wrote a lengthy review of the SRF-59 (now posted on DXer.Ca), which
apparently started the Ultralight radio boom a year ago.

Back then, a lot of guys must have thought I was nuts. But then they
bought SRF-59's (and other Ultralights), and found out they make the same
amazing receptions. To show appreciation for Colin Newell's support on DXer.Ca,
I sent out a few free SRF-59 samples to Canada, which has now become a true
hot spot of Ultralight radio activity. Our Yahoo Group site (ultralightdx)
now has well over 100 members, and we are the fasting growing segment of the
AM-DX community.

For the few remaining skeptics, I strongly recommend that you give it a
try. Today's pocket radios have phenomenal improvements in IC chips, RF
circuitry and digital design. They can run circles around the pocket portables
of the 60's, 70's and 80's. Stock (unmodified) Ultralight radios have
received every continent in the world from right here in North America, and the
DXers involved in such thrilling receptions (including myself) have become the
most enthusiastic AM-DXers on the planet.

     73, Gary DeBock
