[IRCA] KPUA-670 (Hawaii) -- Blowtorch at Grayland, Inaudible at Home
Hello Guys,
After receiving a booming KPUA-670 at Grayland two days ago with a
solid "9" signal (and absolutely no KBOI QRM) from 1315-1345 UTC on even the
smallest Ultralights, I thought this would be a very easy catch at my home in
Puyallup, about 80 air miles east of Grayland, WA. Just wait until KBOI fades
out, then KPUA-670 should be there, right? Wrong!
Whereas KPUA was a solid "9" at Grayland with no trace of KBOI from
1315-1345 UTC, KBOI was a solid "9" in Puyallup from 1315-1345, with no trace of
KPUA! Apparently there is an "ocean of difference" in the propagation to
Hawaii on the coastline, compared to a few miles inland.
Not only was KPUA-670 (in Hilo) booming in at Grayland with its Wall
Street Journal morning programs for a solid hour from 1300-1400 UTC, but a
weaker KGU-760 (in Honolulu) was also easily audible, after San Diego faded out
around 1300. During the early 70's, Hawaii was a pretty common catch in
Puyallup with the old KMVI-550, KORL-650 and KIKI-830, but it's not easy anymore
(at least with small portables)..
73, Gary
