[IRCA] $30 Loopstick Mod Provides Huge Sensitivity Boost for Sony ICF-SW7600GR
Hello All,
In a project to develop a highly sensitive but compact SSB-equipped
portable, the stock 4 75" x .37" loopstick in an ICF-SW7600GR was successfully
replaced by a 7.5" x .5" Amidon ferrite bar-based loopstick, with the 981 mh
inductance of the main coil matched in the replacement loopstick (wound with
40/44 Litz wire). The replacement loopstick provides about twice as much
ferrite as the stock bar, with an MW-frequency-optimized design for both the
ferrite and Litz wire.
The performance improvement has been quite impressive, boosting the low
and high-band sensitivity past the level of a stock ICF-2010, from a
previous level of inferiority on all frequencies. This modified ICF-SW7600GR
package is not much larger than a stock unit, and far more compact than an
ICF-2010.
For those interested in this project, a detailed do-it-yourself file
should be prepared shortly, with a list of the commonly available materials.
No real technical experience is required to perform the modification, and the
four connection points on the circuit board are easily accessible. For those
who have desired decent split-frequency capability in a very small package,
this modified ICF-SW7600 may be a good option.
