Re: [IRCA] "Hot-Rodded" DT-200VX Digital ULR is a Reality
To Mesa Mike,
Thanks very much for your comments on the DT-200VX antenna transplant
operation.
The DT-200VX stock antenna has two separate coils-- a longer base coil,
and a "piggyback" shorter coil, for a total of 4 connections. A transplant
"surgeon" should attempt a larger-proportion "copy" of the original 2"
loopstick, reducing the number of coil turns slightly for the huge transplant
loopstick, to compensate for the increased inductance of the much longer ferrite
bar. The original connections to the DT-200VX must be exactly observed, in the
transplant operation.
Mike, I have never considered the SRF-M37V as a suitable candidate for
transplant, primarily because of its urban RF issues (spurs and images) in
stock form. In these experiments, if your mega-transplant is successful and
you get a "nuclear" boost in sensitivity, you will also get a huge increase in
any negative effects like spurs and images. You will also have HUGE signal
strength from your locals, putting a premium on selectivity. For this purpose,
the two successful mega-transplant operations were purposely performed only
on two ULR's with great stock resistance to urban RF issues, and decent stock
selectivity. Both of these transplant experiments have proven the wisdom of
this approach. IMHO, the DT-200VX is the only suitable digital ULR for a
mega-transplant... all the others would have mega-problems with spurs, images
and selectivity. What we all greatly desire is simply a huge sensitivity
boost-- not a huge boost in RF problems.
73 and Best Wishes,
Gary
