[IRCA] More on KXTO QRSS

Several people have mentioned a posting by Harry Helms raising some concerns
about the inclusion of QRSS in the upcoming KXTO maintenance test. I haven't
seen the comments, but do have tremendous respect for Harry---could someone
please send
them to me?

I will mention that a 2.5khz tone transmitted from a stable frequency source
will result in narrow audio carriers at 1547.5kHz & 1552.5kHz which should
be detectable using software like Argo or Spectran. The biggest problem
would be if you have a local station on 1550khz which would swamp the AGC on
the receiver.

My personal experience with QRSS has been limited to reception of "Lowfer"
and amateur stations in the LF range, but I can tell you that the technique
works amazingly well. A couple of years ago, KFI in Los Angeles had a slight
drift in it's carrier signal which could easily be detected worldwide.

Best results here have been obtained by operating the receiver in USB or LSB
mode, with a narrow filter and the AGC control defeated (turned off
completely). I adjust RF gain and AF gain to produce the best possible
"trace" on the software.

It sounds complicated, but in reality, it's fairly simple. I encourage
everyone to experiment with the software prior to the test.
