*** That big cash is an elusive target. First there's the cash outlay
for equipment and facilities while still maintaining the old ones with
no revenues to offset it. Second there's the long ramp-up period once
the new one gets built - also all the while with minimal revenues
because receiver penetration always lags - and in a transition, they're
still maintaining/operating two stations.
The promise of a big payday is part of what has been used to drive
conversion to digitial, and on AM it may never pan out. This would be
worse because the station costs are greater. It's an economic paradigm
filled with a lot of big 'if's' and a lot of risk - presuming it even
gets that far, and the majority of small-to-medium stations ( many of
whom can't even afford to go digital ) would fall out of the equation
in numbers such as to make the whole proposition non-viable.
