Thanks for the reply. I will open up the wallet at some point. A radio
isn't free, now is it? Anyway...Chris loaned me a Radio Shack mobile unit
and an antenna when I met him Saturday. I'm not sure of the model number or
how to use it. I still have to read the manual he gave me.
When I went over and told my ham neighbor today, he gave me an ICOM
handheld, but he couldn't find the manual. Once again, I'm not sure of the
model number, but I think I can look it up at their site and perhaps
download a manual if he can't find his.
So I have two rigs that I can put to use in the next day or so. But I
still want to buy one of my own. I know with the tech class I'm somewhat
limited in what I buy, but I'd still like to own something. I think the real
fun starts at the general level when more bands open up, but what do I know?
I only got my license Saturday.
Oh...I know I will get some serious flak over this, but CW isn't in my
near future. I feel fortunate enough to have learned enough to pass the
first test Saturday. Now I have to figure out when I can upgrade. Maybe I
will learn code at some point, but for now...
Any and all advice will be appreciated.

Bert,
"Now...where do I go from here?"
Gadgets, radios, antennas!! Open your wallet and let it fly! :)
Have you thought about learning CW?? With the freeware on the internet,
learning cw is easier than ever. G4FON's software is really great and has
launched a lot of newbie hams in CW. With CW, you can have a lot of fun on
simple, inexpensive battery powered qrp radios and work the world on 5 watts
and wire antennas.
Less than 5 years ago I was on the air (40 meters) for under $100.00 with a
Smallwonder labs SW40+ (kit), a gift straight key, scrounged gel cell
battery, earbuds, and resonant dipole that was set-up gratis by the local
radio club which traditionally provides new hams with dipoles and
feedlines.
