Re: [IRCA] Crystal radios

Craig,

Here's an article by Mike Tuggle of Hilo, Hawaii, who, IMHO, is the top xtl
set DXer in the world. I've recently heard a sound clip of WWL 870 New
Orleans that he recorded on his set in Hawaii. My ideas on set construction
are without shame, "lifted" from this article. My front end antenna coil
uses a 130 mh solenoid of 660/46 litz. Mike uses a ferrite core/litz combo.

660/46 litz has been through experimentation by many determined to be
without equal. 44 works, but 46 seems to be best for MW. Unloaded coil Q
exceeds at 1000. Hundreds of schematics and designs are at
www.crystalradio.net Home of the annual dx contest is at
www.crystalradio.us Photos and descriptions of competitive sets are in the
photo album including one by yours truly. Lem Morrison's antenna tuner
looks like a Collins RX. My set has logged close to 400 MW stations from my
qth. We also have a one active device contest featuring regens and exalted
carriers. I didn't have this set ready for last year: my set was a one tube
regen which overloaded badly with my local pests. This one tube superhet
design by Jack Bryant is superb and handles the locals like the superhet it
is: http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=87&subpageid=277688&ck=

The schematic is in Jack's One tube folder. This stuff can hook you deep if
you are not careful, which is probably just what you wanted to hear. <g>
