It's a matter of taste, I guess, but I like the fine tuning pot approach. I
recently found a 10-turn "Helipot" in the junk box, so I added it to my
MFJ-1026 as a fine phasing adjustment (in place of the unneeded "T/R Delay"
pot). The old phasing pot is still there, so it can be used as a coarse
adjustment to rapidly find the vicinity of the null, and then the fine tuning
pot is used to tweak it. I decided that the gain pots didn't need fine
tuning, but I replaced the originals with higher quality units, and installed
larger knobs.
