Michael-
I am not that sure about which story is correct or not correct. I have heard
a bunch of them over the years. Including the one about the cows. It reminds
me of the stories about the navy putting in VLF equipment in the Michigan
upper peninsula. The station used buried antenna and runs a billion or so,
watts. It is said to kill the trees and cows.
Don't really know for sure.

NOT 500 KW (by technicality). There was an experimental license issued for
the 500 KW transmitter that was at the same facility (I think). The 500 KW
and 50 KW transmitters both operated, but not concurrently. I believe they
both aired the WLW programming though. The 500 KW experimental license went
the way of the two-dollar bill. If I remember, there were a lot of
complaints of livestock turning into deadstock from the high RF levels.
