Following up- it is possible the FSR station on 980 was WTEM in Washington as their website has them running the Fox Sports format, but I did clearly had a North Carolina station this morning on 980 in the hash, but the PSAs for those North Carolina state agencies I heard were all non-descript and not helpful in pinning down which part of North Carolina this station was in.  I am still wondering about the station in Winston Salem, though.

And the newer listings I am seeing for WTIX in Winston Salem list the station as currently dark.

Question- is WTIX active on 980 from Winston Salem?  If so, is it running Fox Sports Radio?  With calls like WTIX, I would think that if they are active, they would have a sports format. Help!
