My first new receiver was a Hallicrafter's S-120 that my parents bought
at Sears Roebuck. I think this was for my 14th birthday in 1966. I seem
to remember that it cost around $50 which was quite a lot of money to me
at the time. It was connected to a huge inverted L antenna strung
between two telephone poles that my dad installed just for that purpose.
I recall that the S-120 had a hot chassis and I had to reverse the
2-prong wall plug to keep from getting shocked. This was, of course,
before polarised wall sockets. I don't have that original S-120. But a
few years ago I bought a non-working S-120 for $5 at a hamfest just for
nostalgia reasons.
