Re: [IRCA] W stations and H-800 back in action

Doug, Dennis

I put up a new 20X55X20 EWE this past Fall. I was hoping it would do
better for TA's. It really didn't. However, it did increase my DX to the
NW more, as I heard the NW TPs stronger than I do on my SW EWE. I find
more of the low power Hokakido and Koreans are heard more often now.
639,1071, 1197 STV stations are heard often. Korean on 1305 that Nick
has reported, I hardly ever heard, now I hear it often too. The SW EWE
does get the Northern Asians, but not nearly as well. It does better
with Taiwan, Filipinos, and farther South, the Pacific. The SW EWE is
22X100X22. I was thinking of a Westerly EWE, but I think the two
patterns would just overlap. It would not give me anything more. What I
really need is a EWE for TA's, but the trees are not in the right
location for that. I guess I could put up a 20 foot pole. If I could
keep it up in the wind. For TAs, the 45' vertical does the best job, but
that isn't saying a whole lot.
Out here .8 miles from the ocean, JOIK, JOUB, HLAZ, etc are regular
visitors pretty much nightly. Lately with the WNW EWE, even on poor
nights I get hets on 1188 (HLKX) and 1197 (STV). So the WNW EWE does do
a better job on those Northern TPs. No doubt about that.
Also the WNW EWE brings in the Alaskan most nights. In the past when I
even had the NNW beverage, Alaskans were not heard all of the time,
except KTKN. Now KAGV-1110, KFQD-750, KNOM-780, are all common except
during AU CX. I have never heard so many Alaskans. So the right antenna
is needed for the job.
In my case a good ground it easy come by here with soft soil. My yard
is loaded to ground rods. The soil is so soft in most places that you
can "push" a 4 foot Radio Shack rod halfway into the soil before you
have to pound it in. When the contractor replaced the service out here
and put in two new 8 foot rods, it was easy as pie to get them in. A
piece of cake. With all of the water in the ground this year, my ground
system is sitting under water. Even the neighbors electric fence has
been sitting in water for weeks, so no noise there. hi.
I would rather have beverages of 1500' long running in all directions
as one DXer has in Oklahoma, but I don't have the property, so the EWE
is second best. But I cannot complain. Most of the Asian & Pacific DX I
would never have logged without the EWE. The same is true for the stuff
to the East, off the Eastern Beverage.
