I used to do the same thing in high school, especially on Monday
mornings. I think it affected a few of my grades, but I got into
college anyway.
One Monday morning in 1969 I tuned to 1460 at 3 am and heard a really
loud station playing the National Anthem. I eagerly awaited the signon
announcement, knowing that with a signal this good it would be easy to
ID it. The SSB ended and the station launched straight into the Fifth
Dimension's "Age of Aquarius". They'd apparently run the signon
announcement before the SSB, and to make matters worse it faded out
halfway through the song. I never did figure out who it was, but I
remember this moment every time I hear that @#$! song.
1560 was one of my favorites back then. KPMC Bakersfield still signed
off nightly in the mid 70's, so this was probably the last frequency
that was wide open every night on the west coast. Over time, I managed
to hear most of the many daytimers in the midwest and east coast,
including both SC stations and WSMD-MD, plus 2RE, 3 or 4 Mexicans,
Puerto Rico, and possibly a couple other Latins. As Yoda would say "A
really fun channel it was".
