*** Sounds like the signal path may be being bent or refracted by its
passage thru the polar area. The same sort of phenomenon was observed
back in the 1970's in ECNA on the 1525 signal from Sinkiang. 

Much of what we may see every day as signal reflection actually is
refraction because of the irregularity of the various layers in the ionosphere.
