Caveat DXer. I mounted a PCIM177 in the left side of the "display window" of
my 12-655 and could never get rid of all the noise it generated. I tried
shielding and coax and a source follower and still had a bit of a problem.
In the end I put a toggle switch on the side of the radio to kill the
display when I wanted. I just couldn't give up the PCIM-177 - it fits
perfectly into the TRF if you cut the clear plastic display window a bit.

Something similar (the PCIM177 from Singapore I believe) was used here on a
TRF-655 years ago...had to use a buffer from the local oscillator to cut
down the noise from the display getting back into the radio. Also placed
the display in a separate metal box mounted to the front of the radio for
that reason. Don't know if the AADE generates noise the same way though,
but it is something to be concerned about.
If you have a very elderly DXer's Technical Guide, 2nd edition, the
information is on page 92-93, otherwise I can scan you a copy.
Hmm, even better, try IRCA reprint M-031 for the same info plus some from
Frank Aden and Bill Block. It's on Lee Freshwater's fine CD of all the
reprints.
best wishes,
Nick
