I think that may be part of it. A reduced bandwidth would make the digital
appear that much better.

I've often said I'd like a comparison with a 1950's wideband transmitter and
receiver. Say, a Western Electric Doherty transmitter and Zenith console
radio. Or even better is the WLW HiFi effort where they got out to 20KHz
bandwidth with low distortion and flat response. Within the IBOC fans
10mv/m contour, I bet that would sound darn good. Probably better than the
IBOC audio. Maybe better than some of the FMs these days.

A friend has a Gates Vanguard 1kw rig. This is a linear amplified
transmitter and has the best audio of any commercial rig, according to some
of my compadres that have worked with it. Maybe I'll see if I can talk him
out of it and tune it to one of my clients' channels. That would make an
interesting test. Of course, I'd have to completely ignore the NRSC 10KHz
rolloff mandate. But for a test, who cares? I could pop it on 1220, as
they do mostly live programming and are a studio/transmitter site. I don't
know where I'd get the time, though.

Ah well. I really don't want to fire up this thread again. I'll say no
more..
