Re: [IRCA] ISP Help

Russ,

The thing you mentioned about PREVIEW mode is one of the most important things about avoiding viruses.  People use it for convenience, and there are so many types of programs (that don't even show up as programs) that Windows will automatically execute that are a major cause for infected computers.  I call IE "Internet Exploder" and the MS email program "LookOut" for good reason.  As far as email goes, even with Yahoo's recent slowness issues, its still a better bet than eating up all the disk space on my computer for another email client that may become irrelevant if I move.

*** No question Outlook Express is worse, but even the regular Outlook
has been vicitmized so many times by viruses and worms specifically
designed to take advantage of the known problems it has, and those that
Microsoft suddenly "discovers" and then widely publicizes, and then
miraculously releases a "fix" for.

Unless you're using a top-grade AntiVirus software coupled with other
mal-ware defenses, run them religiously and keep them religiously
updated ( which most people don't do because it's a pain ) and don't
open any strange attachments, as Tim says, you'll be OK.

One more thing - don't ever set Outlook or Outlook Express in "Preview
mode" because this essentially opens everything as it goes
automatically and lets loose whatever might have made its way past the
other defenses.
