Re: [IRCA] ISP Help

Outlook Express is the default program, not Outlook, which costs extra.
Web-based e-mail definitely has its advantages, but I can't knock Outlook.
I've been using it for years, and at least when it's coupled with Norton
Internet Security, I've never caught a virus that way. I don't have much
experience with Outlook Express, so I can't comment on that, except to say
that everything I've heard and read jibes with Russ' comments.

My feeling is that web-based is better than using Outlook, especially for
the new user. Outlook is the default program and it is also low quality in
terms of it's 'resistance' to spam and viruses, which is minimal. While that
is partly because it is the email program default, it is also poorly
defended.

I have used Yahoo quite happily for several years, although I'm now starting
to see intermittent serious slowness which has never been there before,
which is neither my system nor the ISP ( Verizon DSL ).
I've found Hotmail to be mostly indifferent to spam and therefore fdropped
it about 2 years ago.

The beauty of web-based email is its portability and also that the mail
stays on the web - it never resides on the PC, which is a major line of
defense against spams and viruses.
