You beat me to it, however, it must be said that it can, and sometimes is, blocked/interfered with.

It was around 2012, I was flying into Seoul, Souht Korea, and the North was jamming the GPS signal. Localized, fair enough, but it can happen.

We tend to always favor new technology, but old ones sometimes make a come back, either for simplicity, or because nobody else is using it anymore.

I'm well aware that overtime you can fill a piggie bank with pennies, but what's the percentage of this expense in the grand scheme of things, i.e., the US budget?

P.S.1. Ending Radio Canada International's shortwave service saved money, but I'm still wondering if the savings were worth it.

P.S.2. I'm of the opinion that 'straight' savings are applicable to private endevours only. At a government level, other factors usually come into play.
