A 500 ohm in series with a 680 ohm fixed resistor would give you a 680-1180
ohm range, and a more vernier control. Or, as Chuck suggested, a 1000 ohm
pot and 470 ohm resistor would give 470-1470 ohm range. 500 and 1000 ohm
pots are standard parts.
