Thanks, Nick. I'll see what the Japanese DXers have to say about it.
Oddly enough, Japanese stations were almost totally shut out in the Cook Islands. Only 774-JOUB made a weak appearance under 3LO on one morning. The sunrise session gray line propagation was heavily slanted toward eastern China stations, as well as toward those slightly west of the Chinese coast (Bangladesh, Mongolia and Cambodia). Who am I to complain? :-)

In this Cook Island recording at 1658 on April 11th the female Cambodian announcer starts out dominant, and the Cambodian National Anthem starts off at 55 seconds, mixing with Shandong's Chinese until 1:41 into the recording, when the "cuckoo clock" time pips start (thanks to Hiroyuki Okamura and Jari Letinen for identifying the Cambodian anthem). But Cambodia's anthem continues during and after the time pips, which would seem odd for a station to broadcast if it is playing a national anthem in a sign-off routine. On the other hand Shandong's speech stops during the time pips at 1700 UTC, and seems to resume after them. Does anyone know if Shandong is the source of the strange time pips? https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/takoyz5d3l19wockuky8x1e0d8m8fiv0 https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/takoyz5d3l19wockuky8x1e0d8m8fiv0
