To teachers' eternal ire, we brats appreciated days off. TV preemptions irksome but late autumn RI weather was for change sunny, increasingly warm as mourning days went on and on....
Reveled in digitally-deprived, analog-rich activities. Rode bikes down river banks. Shoved Bic pens thru 8 mm film reels, stuck them into cardboard boxes, pretended they were Nike radar transmitters. Rigged field phones with old bell wire, batteries, and phones left behind - along with unforgettable fragrance - by tenants who croaked without telling their neighbors.
King & Bobby hits about same. Both too close to final exams, no time for Splenda sentimentality. Eighth grade serious business, couldn't afford to fail, having registered for Draft two years previously....
