Blame the processing, not the transmitter itself. There are plenty of
transmitters out there that are 30 or 40 years old and still going, and
still plenty clean with the right processing. At WXXI, we replaced our
Harris MW5 (circa 1979) with a new Nautel XR6 in 2015. Our backup
transmitter is an RCA BTA-5G from 1954. It's the nicest-sounding rig in
town on the rare occasions it still runs. (The Nautel is effectively its
own backup, with a redundant pallet of power amplification.)

What is the typical life cycle between overhauls? 10 years?
I frequently drive within 1/4 mile of the 50kw WLS site
and have never detected any splatter. Better quality
gear? Or bigger budget?
