Re: [IRCA] AFN AM Frequencies

Wow, nice and unbelievable at the same time! It's hilarious how a station can get out only a few miles locally at night but be heard 700 or 800 miles away clearly.

There are two stations in the clip - 1440 AFN Daegu, 5kw in Chilgok, and 1440 AFN Osan in Pyeongtaek, 1kw. These are the only two stations on 1440 in Korea. Pyeongtaek gets out very well in the daytime, perhaps among the best of any lower powered station (though not strong, they're audible at a pretty good distance, clear into North Korea), but they only get out perhaps 10 miles at night. It's an easy signal to hear at my main FM DX site 8 miles from their tower, but no chance 30 miles north in Seoul. Even before 1440 AFN Daegu came on, the frequency was entirely Sapporo, 860 miles to the east. I have never heard even a peep from AFN Osan at night, ever. Chilgok has a superb signal since they upgraded all their equipment prior to moving from 1080 in May though -- shame for them, since 1080 is quite open after almost every station around vacated the premises the other week, so no surprise that 1440 gets out very well into Japan and elsewhere.

Listen to the clip carefully. There seems to me to be several AFN stations
audible, all slightly out of sync. PAL lists 3 in Korea. My suspicion is
that we're hearing all 3. In Masset, I have very occasionally heard
similar, slightly out of sync transmitters on 1575, when programming is in
//. Other times, they play different feeds. I'll definitely spend more
time on 1440 when I'm in Masset next time. 73,....Walt

Chris and All,

1440-AFN in Daegu apparently has enough strength to be easily heard in the
Tokyo area. Hiroyuki Okamura of Yokosuka, Japan received this signal (and
