Re: [IRCA] DKAZ questions

No argument about the cost. But getting it working out of the starting gate is nice if one's time is at a premium.

Do you mean transformer and weatherproof amplifier at the antenna Chuck? Unfortunately, I have no experience of that.

And, I don't have anecdotal info about the DKaz using both amplifiers unfortunately, but the experience with the Flag was that a transformer at the antenna and amplifier at the radio seemed to deliver a noisier signal (though just as loud) than replacing that setup with the FLG100. At the time I presumed that the Flag was having common mode problems on the coax feedline so that household electrical noise was being conveyed to the Flag. I assume that chokes and cleaning up the wiring around the shack might have helped that problem, but a regular paycheque made buying the FLG100 a better choice, in retrospect. Time was a cost too then (when isn't it?)

best wishes,

Nick

But what I'd like to know is whether a homemade 16:1 transformer and a 20 dB 50 Ohm preamp work just as well. They would cost a lot, lot less, but (I assume) give up a small amount of gain.

Agreed. They do cost a fair amount (mind you the exchange rate
with the pound isn't bad right now), but are solidly built and work
very well. Money well spent.
