Re: [IRCA] XE format (was Re: 590 Musical Off to a Wobbling Restart; 15 0022Z OCT 05; PVZ)

Excuse me. I was trying to understand why the name of a country would be used as a format, which makes no sense. Your explanation was to say “Might not be so obvious to someone in California.” That statement tends to defend calling a format “Mexican” or “Cuban” which, simply, is wrong.

DXers usually want to know (especially of they send reports) how to describe accurately the type of programming and music on a station. Since about 75% of stations in Mexico don’t play the music WAFC plays, calling the station “Mexican” is inaccurate.

For the sake of others who DO care about music forms, I checked the playlist of WAFC and it is mostly ranchera grupera and norteña music. In Mexico, this format would be known as “grupera” to distinguish it as a blend of various forms of music. There could also be pure norteña stations, and pure ranchera ones. Add in vallenato (imported from Colombia) and cumbia (idem) and banda, and you have the prevalent forms of what in the US music industry is called “regional Mexican music.” Many smaller market stations in Mexico play some mix of this, and a percentage of large market ones do too.

Calling most of the Miami Spanish stations Cuban is definitely politically incorrect, as well as wrong. Despite being a day or two a week in Cali, I have some familiarity with Miami radio.

Whatever.

I'm not interested in a fight, just tried to explain the reference you asked about.

Since I didn't say any of the things you are correcting, I'm not sure the point of your comments.  I certainly don't appreciate being called politically incorrect, or any other names.

I'll not bother you further, and trust you'll show the same consideration.

I guess I can see your point. Still, calling a format “Mexican” is highly inaccurate, as the kind of music on WAFC is popular in many countries. Similarly, the stations in Miami are not all directed at “Cubans” and, except for a couple of the AM talkers, would not be properly referred to as “Cuban” formats. Personally, I find calling the WAFC format “Mexican” to be a tad on the politically incorrect side. Of course, I don’t think there is a “Cuban” format, either.

It's pretty obvious when you listen to WAFC Clewiston, as compared to the Cubans and domestics programming for Cubans.  Those of us in Florida often make the distinction between Cuban origin, Cuban directed and other Spanish language formats.  Might not be so obvious to someone in California.

Oh. I have no idea what a specific “Mexican” format would be, though… since there are so many of them, ranging from Spanish rock to oldies. I’ve never heard of an “American” format, either (g) .

I would guess than an XE format is Mexican; a reference to the XE-- Mexican calls.
