For reference, Ramadan is the 9th month of the
lunar-based Islamic calendar. The boundaries
of each month are based on the new moon.
Since the official start of any following month is
based on when the crescent of the new moon is
sighted, the first day of the month in the Islamic
calendar typically is a day behind the true
astronomical new moon (when the moon is
technically invisible in front of the sun). This
cycle slips forward by about 11 days every
western year so next year it begins in late
September. In a few years it will occur in
summer and the DXing opportunities given
us will be unavailable. Ramadan calls for daytime
abstinence from eating, drinking, sex etc so
the night time partying is the reason for all
the late hours on the radio. During the summer
heat, this can be a challenge for the observant.
The boundary is (was?) when the daylight was
sufficient to tell a white thread from a black thread
while outdoors. sort of a low-tech model.
