Being one of the junior
ancients in the hobby, I will babble about the past. While living in
Modesto, CA (Central Valley), between 1968-1972, a group of DXers in the San
Jose, CA, area were occasionally hearing TAs. I received a call from one of the
San Jose DXers advising me that the BBC was being heard at a fair level
(frequency was either 1205 or 1215 - I can't recall which). I checked
and noted a carrier and that was all. Padre Jack Pejza later published an
article (DX Monitor, I think) explaining why the Central Valley was not a good
place to hear TAs - something about mountains blocking signals or some such. As
usual, the Padre was correct.
Point being, as the
sunspot cycle is declining, it might behoove, beclaw, bepaw or some such for
anyone with copies of DXM and/or DXN, during the above years, to do some
checking. No guarantees, but if one can pinpoint which year was best for West
Coast TAs back then, correlating that period of the sunspot cycle with today's,
it might be a predictor of which upcoming years will bear watching. Just a
thought.
Well, have to close. The
wife says my prune juice latte is ready.
