Hi Ira, One of the things I like so much about this hobby is that it is so
unpredictable. You never know from hour to hour what will come up on top of
a frequency if you sit there long enough. In the summer I find it much
easier to catch the "semi locals" and regionals around my area that are
normally covered up by the stronger stations during the traditional DX
season. To me summer DXing be it SS , SR, or just sometime in the middle of
the night, has it's own characteristics. I change my technique and tend to
use more portable radios so that I can control the exact degree of null
required to hold onto a particularly weak signal. I have plans to make or
buy a good loop to use with my R-75 so that I can get the most out of the
upcoming season.
You are definitely right about the lightning storms around our area. They
seem to come out of nowhere!. I'll get with you off list and go over my
setup regarding lightning protection and grounding. I think I took pictures
of the whole setup but finding them might be a problem.
Well I better go, It's migraine time again.
Best regards,
John Hunter

Thanks for noticing the hard work I've been putting in lately. A few weeks
ago, I was worried that I'd heard everything from this locale barring new
equipment, but I have heard some new things recently. I hope to hear more
once I get an antenna up for my Drake R8B.
Say...what do you use for lightning protection up there? I've been meaning
to ask you since you're close by and we experience some of the same
weather. How is your antenna grounded, radio, shack, etc? I have lost two
rigs to lightning over the years here in Watkinsville and my wife will
kill me if I let another go. Plus we have a new home and I don't want to
lose it either! Give me some feedback when you get the time.
Cheers!
Bert
